The Colours That Never Go Out of Style

Black, white, charcoal and grey: why the monochrome palette outlasts every trend, and how to wear each shade in oversized streetwear.

The Colours That Never Go Out of Style

Trends move in colour. A shade arrives, saturates every feed for a season and then disappears, leaving a wardrobe full of pieces that suddenly look dated. The colours that stay are the ones that never asked for attention in the first place: black, white and the greys between them. They are the foundation of almost every serious menswear and womenswear wardrobe — and the backbone of dark aesthetic and minimal streetwear.

Here is why each one endures, and how to wear it well.

Black

Black is the most complete colour in fashion. It is formal and casual at once, it hides the clutter of a busy outfit, and it makes a silhouette the main event. On an oversized t-shirt, black turns relaxed volume into something that looks intentional.

Wear it: head to toe, with texture providing the variation — heavyweight cotton against a matte trouser, a ribbed collar against a smooth body. Tonal black is the signature of dark streetwear for a reason; our dark streetwear guide explores it in depth.

Keep it black: wash cold, inside out, and dry in the shade. Fading is what turns black into a tired grey.

White

White is contrast in its purest form. Against black it looks sharp and graphic; on its own it looks clean and quiet. It also reflects light near the face, which is why a white tee photographs well and reads as fresh in the heat.

Wear it: as the counterpoint in a monochrome outfit — a white oversized tee with black bottoms is one of the most reliable combinations there is. Choose dense, heavyweight fabric so it holds its shape and does not turn sheer.

Charcoal

Charcoal is black with the edge taken off. It keeps the depth and seriousness of black while adding a softer, more lived-in character. It also layers beautifully: charcoal under black, or black over charcoal, creates depth without introducing a new colour.

Wear it: as a drop-shoulder tee under an open black overshirt, or as the top half of a tonal outfit with black trousers.

Grey

Mid and light greys sit between the extremes and connect them. A grey marl tee is the most forgiving piece in a wardrobe: it pairs with everything, shows wear less than white, and carries the relaxed, athletic history of the classic sweatshirt.

Wear it: with black for a soft contrast, or with white for something lighter and quieter. Grey is where a monochrome palette gets its range.

Off-white and stone

Just beyond pure white are the warmer neutrals — ecru, stone, bone. They sit comfortably in a monochrome wardrobe while adding a touch of warmth, and they age gracefully as the fabric softens.

Wear it: sparingly, as a single lighter piece against charcoal or black.

Why these colours outlast trends

  • They combine freely. Every neutral works with every other, so a small wardrobe produces a large number of outfits. That is the principle behind a capsule wardrobe.
  • They put the focus on cut and fabric. Without colour to distract, people notice proportion, drape and quality — which is exactly where a well-made garment should be judged.
  • They are not tied to a moment. A black tee from ten years ago looks no older than one bought yesterday.
  • They suit every skin tone and occasion. Adjusting the balance of light and dark near the face is all it takes.

Building a palette that lasts

Start with black, add white for contrast, then fill the middle with charcoal and grey. Once those are in place, a single graphic oversized tee in black and white adds personality without breaking the palette. The result is a wardrobe that does not need to be replaced every season — just maintained, and occasionally added to. Explore the oversized collection or the heavyweight oversized range to build yours.
